The 25th running of the John Fulcher Memorial Trial took place in Constantia on 14th October 2018. The weather was somewhat windy with loud cracking noises from the pine trees causing a bit of concern. The wind fortunately abated during the day and the trial got underway after the traditional moments silence with fourteen entries. The classic classes were short of two regular riders; Mark Shearer, still recovering from his knee injury, and Johann Van Blerck, recovering from an eye injury. It was however good to see Charles Mast back again after a long absence on his Honda TL 250.
A twist to the scoring system was introduced for the event whereby five laps could be ridden, but only the four best scores on each section counting towards the final score. This was done to give riders the opportunity to sample the different lines. It worked well as several riders who would have ridden clubman's rode experts instead. Many riders really enjoyed the opportunity to discard their worst score on each section. The sections were located very much in the same places as in previous years, with the tight turns between trees followed by short climbs in loose soil being a regular feature.
Scott Wightman made the trip from Hermanus, and added extra hazards into the expert line for himself, so his score cannot be compared to others in the expert modern class. Kobus had a really good ride to win the class, while Duncan took the classic clubman trophy on the Yamaha TY 175 by a clear margin. I unfortunately was alone in the expert classic class on the Honda TLR 200 so couldn't avoid getting the trophy again.
Thanks to everyone for making this another enjoyable event.

|The totals are the best of four laps. The figure in the last column is the score if all laps had been counted. There were however some riders who didn't complete all five laps.|
